MMU Melaka Chess Open - 6th & 7th Feb

GiLoCatur received the following email from Encik Latiff regarding a chess tournament to be organized by MMU Malacca. So, book the dates for a nice travel to Bukit Beruang, Malacca for the quality tournament on 6th and 7th February.
Good news MMU Malacca Campus is organising a International Chess Event 2010 on the 6 and 7 Febuary 2010 on same format of 2009 event.
asking all bloggers to make this announcement.. Details and further info should be avaliable by weekend. Thank You. Sifu Latiff

GiLoCatur and the kids did participate in the 2008 edition held on 26th and 27th April. But we could not join in the 2009 edition which was held on 28th February and 1st March. Hopefully, this year edition we can participate. GiLoCatur actually likes the time format of G/45, which is 45 minute time-control.

GiLoCatur would like to share the games during the 2008 edition. Looking back at the games, GiLoCatur was basically blunder-prone. During that time, GiLoCatur had MCF / National ratings of 902. But GiLoCatur managed to win against a 1400 rating U12 player. :)-

Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) - Wan Mohd Fazli Wan Nawawi (1572) [B20]
MMU International Open (1.22), 26.04.2008

1.e4 c5 2.c4 Nc6 3.Nc3 g6 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bd3 Nf6 6.0-0 d6 7.b3 0-0 8.Bb2 Bg4 9.Rb1 Nh5 10.Qe1 Bxf3 11.gxf3 Nd4 12.Qd1 Nf4 13.Kh1 Nxd3 14.Ba1 e6 15.Nb5 Qh4 16.Nxd4 cxd4 17.Qe2 Be5 18.f4 Nxf4 19.Qf3 Nh5 20.Qg2 f5 21.f4 Nxf4 22.Qf2 Qxf2 23.Rxf2 fxe4 24.Rbf1 Nd3 25.Rxf8+ Rxf8 26.Rg1 Rf2 27.Rg2 Rxg2 28.Kxg2 Kg7 29.h3 Kf6 30.Kf1 Kf5 31.Ke2 Kf4 32.a4 a5 33.Kd1 Kg3 34.Kc2 Kxh3 35.Bb2 Nxb2 36.Kxb2 g5 37.Ka3 e3 38.dxe3 dxe3 0-1

GiLoCatur : Rb1? on the 9th move followed by Qe1? what a blunder. The idea for Rb1 is Nc5 if not mistaken. h3 is also ok. Then 12.Qd1? A bad move. Qe3 or Kh1 should be better. Then, the rest was history. The opponent is from UIA chess team. His latest MCF ratings is 1649. He played in the recent GACC varsity team which his team won the third place.

Alif Annuar Musthafa - Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) [C47]
MMU International Open (2.34), 26.04.2008

1.e3 e5 2.Nc3 Nc6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.e4 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.d3 Nxc3 7.bxc3 Bc5 8.Bg5 Ne7 9.Qb1 0-0 10.Nxe5 Qd5 11.Nf3 Qf5 12.d4 Bb6 13.Qb4 Nd5 14.Qb1 Re8+ 15.Be2 Nxc3 16.Qc1 Nxe2 17.Qb2 Ng3+ 18.Be3 Nxh1 19.Nh4 Qxf2+ 20.Kd1 Qxe3 21.c3 Nf2+ 22.Kc2 Qd3+ 23.Kb3 Be6+ 24.d5 Bxd5+ 25.Ka3 Bc5+ 26.Qb4 Qxc3+ 27.Ka4 Qxb4# 0-1

GiLoCatur : In this game, GiLoCatur was aggressive from the beginning. When white moved 25.Ka3, GiLoCatur missed mate in 2, Qa6+ 26.Kb4 Nd3#. But nevermind, GiLoCatur won finally. LOL!

Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) - Ahmad Azri Bin Ahmad [D37]
MMU International Open (3.27), 26.04.2008

1.e4 e6 2.Nc3 Nh6 3.Nf3 Nc6 4.d4 d5 5.Bb5 f6 6.0-0 a6 7.Bd3 e5 8.dxe5 fxe5 9.Re1 dxe4 10.Rxe4 Ng4 11.Bg5 Qd6 12.Bc4 h6 13.Qxd6 cxd6 14.Bh4 Nf6 15.Re2 Bf5 16.Rc1 b5 17.Bb3 g5 18.Bg3 e4 19.Ne1 Be7 20.f3 exf3 21.Nxf3 Kd7 22.Rd1 Ne8 23.Nd5 Rb8 24.Nxe7 Nxe7 25.Ne5+ Kc7 26.Nf7 Rf8 27.Rxe7+ Kc6 28.Bd5+ Kc5 29.Bf2+ Kb4 30.a3+ Ka4 31.Bb3+ Ka5 32.Be1+ Kb6 33.Bf2+ Ka5 34.Nxd6 Rd8 35.Be1+ Kb6 36.Rb7+ Kc6 37.Ra7 Nxd6 38.Rxa6+ Kc7 39.Ba5+ Kc8 40.Ra8+ Kd7 41.Ra7+ Kc6 42.Bd5+ Kc5 43.b4# 1-0

GiLoCatur : In this game, GiLoCatur maintained the aggressiveness. GiLoCatur believes that the turning point in this game is 13.Qxd6, exchanging the Queen. Another thing, the opponent did not castle to put the King into safety first. It was opened for the attack especially both white rooks are active.

Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) - Alia Anin Azwa Bakri (1669) [C00]
MMU International Open (4.18), 27.04.2008

1.e4 e6 2.Nc3 d5 3.d3 Nf6 4.Nf3 dxe4 5.Nxe4 Nxe4 6.dxe4 Qxd1+ 7.Kxd1 Bc5 8.Be3 Bxe3 9.fxe3 b6 10.Bd3 Bb7 11.Ke2 Nd7 12.Rhd1 Ke7 13.Rd2 Nc5 14.Ng5 f6 15.Nh3 Nxe4 16.Bxe4 Bxe4 17.g4 Rad8 18.Rad1 Rxd2+ 19.Rxd2 Rd8 20.c4 Bf3+ 21.Ke1 Rxd2 22.Kxd2 Bxg4 23.Nf2 Bf3 24.b4 Kd6 25.a4 a5 26.b5 f5 27.Nd3 e5 28.Kc3 Be2 29.Nc1 Bf1 30.Nb3 g5 31.c5+ Kd5 32.c6 g4 33.Nd2 Be2 34.Nb3 h5 35.Kd2 Bc4 36.Nc1 h4 37.Nd3 Bxd3 38.Kxd3 0-1

GiLoCatur : This game was the toughest as GiLoCatur faced the highest-rated GiLoCatur's opponents in the tournament. GiLoCatur felt to the black's trap after she moved dxe4. She exchanged the Queen and went for pawn endgame which GiLoCatur still yet mastered.

Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) - Muhd Norhazman Arif M Nordin (1420) [C00]
MMU International Open (5.30), 27.04.2008

1.e4 e6 2.Nf3 d5 3.d3 c5 4.b3 dxe4 5.dxe4 Qxd1+ 6.Kxd1 Nc6 7.Bd3 Be7 8.Bb2 Nf6 9.Nbd2 0-0 10.Ke2 Rd8 11.Rad1 Nd4+ 12.Nxd4 cxd4 13.Nf3 Bc5 14.Rhe1 b6 15.Kf1 Bb7 16.e5 Nh5 17.Be4 Bxe4 18.Rxe4 g6 19.Bxd4 Bxd4 20.Rexd4 Rxd4 21.Rxd4 f6 22.Rd7 fxe5 23.Nxe5 b5 24.Nf7 Ng7 25.Nh6+ Kh8 26.Nf7+ Kg8 27.Nd6 a6 28.c4 bxc4 29.bxc4 h6 30.c5 Rb8 31.g3 Rb2 32.c6 Kf8 33.c7 1-0

GiLoCatur : In this game, once again GiLoCatur felt to the early stage Queen exchange trap which resulted in not able to make castling. But luckily, GiLoCatur escaped defeat. GiLoCatur managed to have a passed pawn.

Denson Chong Chow Yuen - Saleh Bin Abd Latif (902) [D37]
MMU International Open (7.29), 27.04.2008

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 Na6 4.Nf3 Nf6 5.h3 dxc4 6.a4 e6 7.e3 Bb4 8.Bxc4 Ne4 9.Qc2 Ba5 10.Qxe4 Nb4 11.0-0 0-0 12.Ne5 Kh8 13.Bd2 Bc7 14.f4 f5 15.Qf3 Rb8 16.Qh5 Bxe5 17.fxe5 a6 18.Ne2 b5 19.Bxb4 Re8 20.Bd6 Ra8 21.axb5 cxb5 22.Bxb5 Rg8 23.Nf4 g5 24.Nd3 Bb7 25.Bc4 Qe8 26.Qxe8 Rgxe8 27.Nc5 Bd5 28.Bxd5 exd5 29.Rxa6 Rac8 30.Rfa1 h5 31.b4 h4 32.b5 Rg8 33.b6 g4 34.hxg4 fxg4 35.b7 Rce8 36.Ra8 1-0

GiLoCatur : In this game, GiLoCatur tried to be aggressive again. But blundered away one piece i.e. knight. 9. .. Ba5? f5 maybe or Nxc3. When white moved 18. Ne2, GiLoCatur blundered away another knight. What a blunder-prone game! What GiLoCatur can observe is the opponent had capitalized his two bishops. Nothing GiLoCatur can do when down with two pieces.

At the end, GiLoCatur could only win 3 points. GiLoCatur had the rating performance of 1446 after managed to win against a 1400-rated player. GiLoCatur's daughter also scored 3 points while Fikri, GiLoCatur's son, had 3.5/7 points. The tournament was won by FM Nicholas Chan. He managed to win against Ian Udani, the first runner up.

IM Mas and FM Anas as well as Sargeant Ismail Ahmad, a former World Police champion, also participated in the two-day event.
